St. Scholastica Monastery was founded in 1879 when four Benedictine sisters from Ferdinand, Indiana settled in Shoal Creek, Arkansas. In 1925, the community moved to Fort Smith, where we continue to thrive. Through the years we Benedictine sisters have been teachers, nurses, pastoral ministers, social justice advocates, artists and authors. We continue to discern the call to follow God by “listening with the ear of their heart,” and looking forward to continued years of service. For more information, visit St. Scholastica Monastery.
Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and by the life of founder Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy envision a just world for people who are poor, sick and uneducated. Founded in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, the Sisters of Mercy have served in the Diocese of Little Rock since 1851. We profess four vows to God: poverty, chastity, obedience and service to the poor, sick and uneducated and commit our resources to serve, advocate and pray for those in need around the world.
